Carefree transforms vacant accommodation into vital breaks for unpaid carers
Carefree is a charity that provides breaks for unpaid carers by working with accommodation providers to turn their empty rooms into priceless short breaks.
They know how challenging a caring role can be, so a few days away with a partner or a friend can work wonders. It may seem like a small thing, but it can make a huge difference.
To be eligible for a break, carers must be:
- Aged 18 or over.
- Full-time unpaid carer (30+ hours per week).
- Able to arrange interim care.
- Able to pay for extras (admin fee, transport, food, travel insurance etc.).

Carer feedback from a Carefree break
My carefree break was a gift to thank for. Wish in future it could be few more days longer. It makes a huge difference in our life. I enjoyed it so much, it was amazing. I do feel like a new person coming back. Thank you so much for this opportunity.
How it works
Thanks to the generosity of their hospitality partners, Carefree are able to offer short breaks at minimal cost for full-time unpaid carers in need of some time off.
Short breaks can be reserved via their online booking platform where you will find a selection of hotels and holiday cottages throughout the UK. Where, when and for how long, the choice is yours.
There is no charge for the accommodation but you are responsible for all other costs (transport, food, travel insurance etc.) and there’s a £33 admin fee to help with the cost of operating their charity.

I booked my Carefree break at Hilton Double Tree in Herefordshire for two nights. The hotel had a nice garden and spa facilities. It’s a countryside Hotel if someone wants a quiet break. I went in the summer so I had longer days and bright weather to enjoy the place and space. It has made a huge difference to my caring role since I’ve returned, although I would have loved to have stayed a few more nights just relaxing.
