Carers in Southend-on-Sea will benefit from new carer support services, after Carers First were awarded the contract for adult carer support services, following a procurement exercise by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council.
According to the 2011 Census there were 17,682 carers in Southend on Sea, however, more recent research from Carers Week 2020 suggests that there could be around 37,000 adult carers in the borough.
Carers First have been established for 30 years and currently provide the adult carer support services in Essex. We work directly with and for, carers to provide personalised information and support, making it easier for those caring for someone else to continue living their lives to the fullest.
Alison Taylor, Chief Executive of Carers First, said: “Carers First is delighted to be able to support carers in Southend. We understand that caring can be hard, but believe getting the right help shouldn’t be. We will be raising awareness of the amazing role of family carers, delivering a range of support programmes designed by carers on health, wellbeing, practical help and financial issues and help carers manage caring with work and education. We will also introduce a new carers break service, which will be grant-based, so carers will be able to benefit from more personalised breaks. Carers First support and services will be available to carers online, by phone and face to face in the community.”
Cllr Cheryl Nevin, cabinet member for adult social care and health integration, says: “As a former young carer, I’m delighted that the many people caring for loved ones in our town can be assisted. Supporting carers is a vital service commissioned by the council, and we look forward to Carers First starting their new service from 1 October. They will be working hard with local carers to help and support them and introducing a new grant-based carers break service which we hope will be welcomed by local people.”
