Covid-19 and flu vaccines as a carer
Published
19/11/21

Having a caring role has meant that for many over the past two years, there has been an increased worry over food shops, travelling to work, and many more everyday tasks that a large portion of the UK's population takes advantage of. Many unpaid carers have expressed worries over bringing something back into the home of their cared for, and that this has greatly impacted their day-to-day and social lives. This is why we know how important it is to share information on Covid-19 and Flu vaccinations, especially at this time of year.

The Covid-19 booster vaccinations includes prioritisation of unpaid carers, due to the increased risk for those they care for. Anyone currently in receipt of a carer’s allowance or identified in March 2021 as receiving support from a Local Authority or Carers Organisation, are being called nationally for booster vaccinations (please note that it must have been six months since you received the original vaccination/s).

To create an effective process for informing unpaid carers of future Covid-19 vaccinations, a letter from NHS Call and Recall will be sent to nationally identified unpaid carers, instructing you to show it to your GP practice and request that you are recorded as a carer in their system. Be aware that practices may ask a few routine questions before making any changes to their records.

Improving the recording of carers in GP records may also be able to help you in accessing support for the flu vaccination and other primary care interventions to improve health outcomes.
