Damien became a carer for his wife Tracy 11 years ago. Tracy struggles with her mental wellbeing and physical disabilities, and first went into the hospital in 2011, just after the pair had moved to Lincolnshire.

Damien said: “I’d just started a new job, so it was hard to balance that and my caring responsibilities - I ended up taking time off work from stress.”

The hospital told Damien about Carers First, where he began attending group sessions with fellow carers. Thanks to these sessions, Damien was able to connect with others caring for a loved one, not only gaining helpful tips and understanding, but new friendships.

He said: “To know that other people have the same things going on in their own lives was definitely beneficial. I found other people who have been through similar situations, who shared advice and understanding - we still meet up now.”

After attending the support group for a while, Damien noticed he was finding it easier to de-stress. He began to prioritise time for himself between work and visits to his wife at the hospital, spending time at home doing the things he enjoys.

He added: “I still do that up to this day. I’m a full-time carer, so I look after her, but I also have my own hobbies now.”

In fact, Damien was so thrilled with the support Carers First’s group sessions offered, he started helping to run them himself, and has since got more involved with Carers First and its projects.

He explained: “I’m a Digital Champion. I’ve used my computer skills to help other carers to get online. I used to be nervous talking on the phone, but spending time helping others with their computer problems has boosted my confidence in talking to people. Carers First’s support definitely helped me to get over that hurdle and connect with others.”

On the ways Carers First’s support has improved his life as a carer, Damien explained:

“Some days are harder than others, but thanks to Carers First, I have more confidence in myself.

“I even help out with a local radio station. It began with me working behind the scenes helping to organise guests, but my confidence has grown so much I now go on the air two to three times a week. I absolutely love it and it’s great to do something for me.”
