People in receipt of certain welfare benefits will receive their one-off £150 disability ‘Cost of Living’ payment from Tuesday 20 September 2022, the government has confirmed.

To help UK households through the challenging times ahead, the vast majority of those who are eligible can expect to receive their payment between now and the beginning of October.

The ‘Cost of Living’ payment is just one of several support measures introduced by the Government to help combat the cost-of-living crisis, caused by soaring inflation and energy prices.

The payment which aims to help to reduce the financial pressures on disabled people with the rising cost of living, also acknowledges the high disability-related costs people with disabilities often face, such the cost of meeting care and mobility fees.

For disabled people on low incomes, the payment comes on top of other cost of living payments including, £400 for all households to help with energy bills, and an extra £150 for all households living in properties in council tax bands A-D paid through the local council.

The payment comes alongside wider support targeted at disabled people, including help with transport and prescription costs, and expanded support through the Household Support Fund in England – which helps people with food and energy bills.

To qualify for the payment, people must have been claiming an eligible disability benefit in May 2022. These include:

  • Disability Living Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Scottish Disability Benefits (Adult Disability Payment and Child Disability Payment)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment
  • Constant Attendance Allowance and War Pension Mobility Supplement.

The £150 disability cost of living payment is paid automatically by the DWP (Department of Work and Pensions) and does not need to be applied for.
