Singer and Eurovision winner Cheryl Baker of Bucks Fizz fame joined a pop-up Christmas event hosted online by Carers First Essex on Wednesday 14 December.
Cheryl introduced herself by her real name of Rita, saying “I wear ‘Cheryl’ but it is Rita who’s talking to you”, spoke about her own experience of caring for her mum, her music career and Eurovision.
Cheryl shared that she had been a carer for her late mum when she had Alzheimer’s, moving her into the family home. She said family has always been important to her and left Bucks Fizz to be a full-time mum. She is looking forward to having the family all together for Christmas.
14 unpaid, family carers joined the online event including Mel, who looks after her mum and said:
“It was such a tonic to have a giggle with you all and to take my mind off things for a while enjoying Cheryl’s wonderful stories during the Q&A. Her honesty and own experiences were very heartfelt and heart-warming.”
Cheryl praised the carers attending saying:
“I applaud each and every one of you, if I was wearing a hat, I would doff it to you. You are all amazing”.
