The Carers First team in Lincolnshire is celebrating the success of the Men Care 2 project, which has been running for two years. The Men Care 2 project, supported by SHINE Lincolnshire, offers targeted support for male carers, focusing on the unique challenges male carers face.
Male carers often encounter specific mental health challenges that may differ from those faced by other carers. Many male carers face stigma or judgment for taking on caring roles, which can lead to feelings of isolation, inadequacy, or guilt. Men are also more likely to suppress their feelings or express emotions differently than women. Balancing caring responsibilities with work, family, and personal life can also be overwhelming for anyone. Additionally, financial stress can surface if caring responsibilities affect their ability to work or progress in their careers.
Unfortunately, due to the stigma many male carers face, it can make it harder for them to ask for support or acknowledge when they are struggling. This can make accessing support a challenge, which can lead to increased stress and mental health issues, as well as underdiagnosis and inadequate support.
Carers First believes it's essential to create inclusive and supportive environments where all carers, regardless of gender, feel valued and supported in their caring roles.
This is why it's so important that organisations like Carers First play a crucial role in promoting the mental health and overall wellbeing of male carers, recognising these specific challenges, removing barriers, providing targeted support, and encouraging 'me time'.
A key element of the Men Care 2 project is to improve access to information and support, ensuring that male carers are aware of available resources to assist them in their caring roles and are confident to ask for the support they need. Men Care 2 offers a diverse range of activities and trips out, which are planned in co-production with male carers. Recent activities have included archery, bowling, brewery tours, and more.
Feedback from carers who have taken part in the activities showcase the importance of engaging in enjoyable and fulfilling pursuits, providing a break from routine and helping to stimulate good mental health.
"What a great morning at Lincoln Castle, really enjoyed the get together, chat and knowledgeable tour guide. Thank you for arranging a great day."
In addition to the activities offering the opportunity for carers to access some peer support, the sessions have also resulted in some new friendships among male carers, helping more to gain a sense of community through shared experiences.
This shows that by building connections with others who share similar experiences, it creates supportive networks, fostering a sense of community and understanding.
"It was great meeting up with some of the lads today. Very informative event."
The positive feedback we have received from male carers attending the activities underpins the project's success, indicating that 'me time' and targeted support have made a tangible difference in the lives of male carers accessing this support.
"Great morning, I really enjoyed it, and the meal was excellent. Thanks for organising."
"Thank you for giving me the ability to look forward to 'me' time."
This project provides a prime example of how dedicating 'me' time’, targeted support, and engaging activities are integral to male mental health, particularly for those in a caring role. It also highlights the positive impact of prioritising ‘me time' within the context of a supportive community that recognises all carers, regardless of age, gender or location.
