Eleven-year-old twin sisters, Abbi and Teri, have always grown up with their elder sister, Sam, who has physical disabilities. It was two years ago, before the national lockdown, when a change in family circumstances meant they had to take on additional responsibilities to support both their mum and elder sister.

Abbi and Teri registered as young carers with Carers First in 2020. A young carer is someone aged between 5 and 18 who cares for someone. The person they care for could be a parent, grandparent or a sibling. As their sister Sam, has physical disabilities, Abbi and Teri, alongside their mum, Kerry, help care for Sam.

“We help Sam with her medicines, get her dressed, help out at meal times and sometimes help when we’re out too. It can be difficult to get her dressed at times, as she can’t really use her hands so it can be a bit of a struggle.” says Abbi.

Since registering with Carers First, Abbi and Teri have been able to enjoy workshops, activities, and days out, where they can meet and talk to other young carers in a similar situation to themselves. It has also meant they have some time just for them, as due to Sam’s disabilities, it can be challenging getting out and about to certain places.

“Even though they won’t admit it, there is quite a lot they miss out on. There are certain places we can’t go to with Sam.” their mum, Kerry, tells us.

Despite the challenges and responsibilities that come with caring for someone, especially as a young person, Abbi and Teri embrace their roles as carers and are proud of their sister, Sam, and how far she has come in her life too.

“Sometimes it can be hard, but most of the time it’s good and things have improved.” says Teri.

All the family have taken on lots of extra responsibilities in their role as a carer, but they’ve taken it in their stride and with help from Carers First, have been able to have some time to focus on themselves and do what they enjoy.

So, what words of wisdom do they have for other young carers?

Teri said: “Have as much fun as you possibly can because it may not last.”

“Be proud and happy about what you do and the support you’ve given.” adds Abbi.

And a final piece of advice from mum, Kerry: “Take every opportunity that’s given to you, because it is hard and we just take it as part of life but there are people out there who are willing to help and make life much easier – and fun! It’s not all about being at home and the basics, it is about having fun and enjoying life too. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend someone to register with Carers First.”
